SUMMARY:Celebrating 250 Years: “Sounds of the 1700s” featuring Lexington Strings
DESCRIPTION:On July 4\, 2026\, the United States will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n\n\n\nTo honor this historic milestone\, Lexington Strings will present a vibrant recital featuring music of the era contemporary to the document’s signing. The performance will take place at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington Center. \n\n\n\nThe concert program includes: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nAntonio Vivaldi: Concerto in G major for Solo Violin\, Strings and Continuo\, Op. 3 “L’Estro Armonico”\, No. 3\, RV 310 (1711)\n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major\, K. 218 (1775)\n\n\n\nLudwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 3 in Eb major for Violin and Piano\, Op. 12\, No. 3 (1797-1798)\n\n\n\nJohann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major for Violin\, Two Recorders\, Strings and Continuo\, BWV 1049 (1721)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased in Lexington\, Massachusetts since 1984\, Lexington Strings are musicians Letitia Hom\, Yukiko Ueno Egozy\, Michael Valdez and Vida Baterina Hom. \n\n\n\nMs. Hom plays a violin originally commissioned by and made for Roman Totenberg in 1982. Created by luthier Guy Rabut in New York City\, her violin is patterned after Mr. Totenberg’s 1736 Giuseppe “del Gesù” Guarneri violin made in Cremona\, Italy. \n\n\n\nThis program is made possible by the generous donors to the Cary Library Foundation.

SUMMARY:Screening & Discussion - "The Black Patriots of Lexington – Prince Estabrook"
DESCRIPTION:From the Battle of Lexington to the present day\, Black soldiers have continuously fought for this country. During the Revolutionary War\, Black patriots\, along with their Indigenous and White neighbors\, fought one of the world’s most powerful empires for 8 long years. They endured incredible hardship. They sacrificed their lives. \n\n\n\nPrince Estabrook\, the first Black Patriot\, was 35 years old when the Revolutionary War started. He was a member of Captain Parker’s militia. He lived in downtown Lexington near the intersection of what is now Massachusetts Avenue and Grant Street. When he stood shoulder to shoulder with his White neighbors at dawn on April 19\, 1775\, Prince Estabrook was also an enslaved member of the Benjamin Estabrook household. \n\n\n\nPrivate Prince Estabrook served multiple enlistments throughout the war and is one of the few soldiers\, if not the only soldier\, to fight at dawn on April 19\, 1775 and to be serving in the Continental Army in 1783 when the war ended. \n\n\n\nOn July 8\, 2026\, we will celebrate Quock Walker Day\, also known as Massachusetts Emancipation Day with a screening of the Prince Estabrook episode of the Black Patriots of Lexington. Slavery was effectively abolished in Massachusetts through the July 1783 ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in the last of the Quock Walker cases. Thus\, Prince returned to Lexington a free man at the end of the war. The Quock Walker cases and the 1780 Massachusetts Constitution further extended the freedoms espoused in the Declaration of Independence. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, we will have a discussion with Charlie Price and Sean D. Osborne\, two modern day Black patriots of Lexington. Army veteran Charlie Price is a reenactor and former captain of The Lexington Minute Men. Air Force veteran Sean D. Osborne is a storyteller\, public historian\, and producer of the Black Patriots of Lexington YouTube series. \n\n\n\nFor more information on the Black Patriots of Lexington video series visit the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington website and the Lex250 webpage on the Black Patriots of Lexington. This series is dedicated to the Black men and women whose heroic acts have been relegated to the shadows of our historical knowledge. While imagining a world that could be\, they struggled against the world that was. We are the beneficiaries of their sacrifices. As such\, it is our responsibility to remember and share those memories. \n\n\n\nThis free event is cosponsored by the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington\, Cary Memorial Library and Tricons 2 Red Tails.

DESCRIPTION:Join ABCL for the 6th Annual Quock Walker Day aka Massachusetts Emancipation Day: Quock Walker & Freedom Further Extended \n\n\n\nCelebrate Quock Walker Day aka Massachusetts Emancipation Day in Lexington on Saturday\, July 11\, 2026. \n\n\n\nCelebrate the 243rd Anniversary of Massachusetts Emancipation Day and hear how the call to Further Extend the Liberties espoused in the Declaration of Independence Revolutionary War set the stage for Quock Walker’s judicial victories in his 1781 civil lawsuit for battery against his former enslaver led to the 1783 criminal case that ended slavery in Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nJoin us for the 6th Annual Quock Walker Day Community Celebration at the Lexington Visitors Center Lawn\, 1875 Massachusetts Avenue\, Lexington\, MA 02420 – FREE. The festivities start at 11 am with music\, recitation of the Governor’s Quock Walker Day proclamation\, a keynote address by Kimberly S. Budd\, the 38th Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. \n\n\n\nFIND YOUR JOY at any age with storytellers\, Farm to Plate Caribbean American Food Truck\, a dance workshop\, Black heritage scavenger hunts\, hands-on flax processing demonstration\, military reenactors\, and musical performance by Rhythms of Ghana. Festivities close with a poetry recital at 2 pm. \n\n\n\nHonor the 250th anniversary of Liberty Further Extended: Or Free Thoughts on the Illegality of Slave-Keeping. This essay by Rev Lemuel Haynes\, a former Minuteman and Revolutionary War veteran\, critiques the limits of the Declaration of Indepence and dismantles the moral and legal justifications for slavery. These arguments are reflected in Article 1 of the Massachusetts Constitution which was adopted in 1780.
