SUMMARY:Annual Reenactment of Lexington's 1773 Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, unfair British taxes were on everyone’s mind as three ships sat in Boston harbor\, carrying shipments of East India Company tea. Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. Three days later\, the Boston Tea Party would make headlines\, but Lexington was there first. \n\n\n\nEach year\, Lexington History Museums reenacts this occasion with a day of tea history! Join us for fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773\, portrayed by the Lexington Minute Men\, to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea! \n\n\n\nStop by for all the festivities: \n\n\n\nLHM’s Buckman Tavern museum will be open 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\, with holiday decorations. Admission will be “pay what you can!” \n\n\n\nFrom 12:00 – 3:00 PM\, learn more about the history of tea and its alternatives during the Revolution\, with drop-in activities with Lexington History Museums and the Chinese-American Association of Lexington. \n\n\n\nAt 12:00 PM\, join local children’s book author Sabrina Bhattacharjya in Buckman Tavern for a reading and signing of her new book\, The Midnight Writer\, sharing the story of the Battle of Lexington from the perspective of a young girl of the time. \n\n\n\nFrom 12:00 – 1:00\, meet with the Lexington Minute Men and learn more about the town’s role in the coming Revolution as the fire begins to grow in front of the Visitors Center. \n\n\n\nAt 1:00 PM\, join us to burn the tea! We will open with a performance by the William Diamond Jr Fife and Drum Corps\, and will be throwing real tea in the fire\, generously donated by Mark T. DESCRIPTION:Join us for ABCL’s 1st Annual Quock Walker Day Storytelling at Lexington Visitors Center\, 1875 Massachusetts Ave\, Lexington\, MA 02420. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, July 5\, 2025 from 9:45 am to 2:15 pm \n\n\n\nStorytelling\, perhaps the best-known oral tradition of African American culture\, exemplifies the desire to express oneself and convey a sense of heritage. Storytellers remain important people in the community; they transform listeners by sharing new perspectives and forgotten customs of the world in which we live. \n\n\n\nDuring Quock Walker Day at Lexington Visitors Center featured storytellers will celebrate the 242nd Anniversary of Massachusetts Emancipation Day and the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Lexington. They will communicate memories of colonial Massachusetts\, along with tales of resilience\, ingenuity\, emancipation and patriotism from the 18th and 19th centuries. \n\n\n\nAnother Lex250 family event! \n\n\n\nThese storytellers were trained in workshops supported by a grant from the Community Endowment of Lexington.

SUMMARY:Becoming an Historical Reenactor Workshop II
DESCRIPTION:Learn from world-renown storytellers Rochel Coleman and Valerie Tutson how to bring stories to life on the stage and at an historical site. \nLearn how to bring the stories of the Black men and women who played important roles in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19\, 1775. Also\, help to build their 18th century community by learning to tell the stories of the men and women\, Black\, White\, and Indigenous Caribbean who were their family members\, friends\, patrons\, and enslavers. \nLearn storytelling techniques and frameworks to identify\, craft\, and share stories to inspire audiences. \nAnd learn the business of storytelling and reenacting from professionals with decades of experience. \nABCL’s Black Patriots of Lexington is a multi-pronged project that includes a nine-part series that explores the lives of 5 soldiers who fought in Lexington on April 19\, 1775; three Black men who witnessed the battle as Lexington residents and later enlisted in the Continental Army; and two Black women and one Black man who witnessed the first day of war. Of the 8 soldiers\, 3 were born into land-owning\, tax-paying families and 5 were born into enslavement. Facing a column of British Redcoats at dawn\, Lexington’s minutemen bravely stood their ground; though outnumbered\, their defiance sparked a war that would lead to American independence​. The annual USS Lexington Ceremony brings this remarkable legacy home\, connecting the town’s pivotal Revolutionary moment with the bravery of sailors who served on the Lexington ships in later generations​. \nThe USS Lexington Memorial in Lexington \nLocated adjacent to the Lexington Visitors Center\, the USS Lexington Memorial is a striking tribute that bridges local and naval history. The memorial consists of five granite markers\, each dedicated to one of the five ships named Lexington\, and “dedicated to the memory of those who served aboard” these Navy vessels​. Erected in 1988 through a joint effort by the Lexington Lions Club and veterans from USS Lexington (CV-2 and CV-16)​\, the monument ensures that the service of all Lexington crews – from 1776 through World War II – is forever remembered in the heart of the town. Each stone marker bears a brief history of a USS Lexington\, allowing visitors to reflect on the ships’ heroic exploits (for example\, the Civil War gunboat’s valor at Shiloh\, or the carriers’ Pacific triumphs) as they stroll through this small memorial park​. Fittingly\, the USS Lexington ship’s bell is also on display at the Visitors Center next door\, offering a tangible piece of naval history for visitors to see up close​. DESCRIPTION:On the evening of April 18\, 1775\, Paul Revere was summoned and given the task of riding on horseback from Charlestown to Lexington\, approx. 12.5 miles\, to inform two leaders of the Sons of Liberty\, John Hancock and Samuel Adams who were staying in Lexington\, with the news that British soldiers stationed in Boston were about to march into the countryside northwest of the town. During his famous Midnight Ride\, Revere alerted the countryside of the British military movements with shouts of “the Redcoats are coming!” In the early morning on April 19\, 1775\, Capt. John Parker led 77 local militiamen and faced arriving British troops. Someone — still unknown to this day — fired a shot\, that provoked the start of the American Revolution. \nTo honor the 250th anniversary of this historic ride\, guests enjoy a special four-course Colonial-themed feast created by Executive Chef Alissa Tsukakoshi paired with local area brews and spirits from 8 pm-11 pm in a communal dining setting in Town Meeting Bistro. As a nod to Paul Revere\, a portrait of him on horseback is featured over the fireplace. DESCRIPTION:Couriers delivered the news of the conflict at Lexington soon after the event. One of the letters that helped spread the news will be displayed at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in April. Joseph Palmer\, a member of the Massachusetts Committee of Safety\, sent the first urgent missive by messenger Israel or Isaac Bissell in the late morning of April 19\, 1775. Bissell rode to Connecticut and perhaps further. Recipients duplicated Palmer’s letter several times to carry the news far and wide. An online exhibition about the Alarm Letter can be viewed at https://bit.ly/3LNwFri. \nThe museum’s copy of the Lexington Alarm Letter will be displayed alongside a broadside from John Hancock\, issued on April 15\, 1775. DESCRIPTION:Learn from world-renown storytellers Rochel Coleman and Valerie Tutson how to mine the archives and weave primary sources into an engaging story that brings history to life. \nLearn how to bring the stories of the Black men and women who played important roles in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19\, 1775. Also\, help to build their 18th century community by learning to tell the stories of the men and women\, Black\, White\, and Indigenous Caribbean who were their family members\, friends\, patrons\, and enslavers. \nLearn storytelling techniques and frameworks to identify\, craft\, and share stories to inspire audiences. \nAnd learn the business of storytelling and reenacting from professionals with decades of experience. \nABCL’s Black Patriots of Lexington is a multi-pronged project that includes a nine-part series that explores the lives of 5 soldiers who fought in Lexington on April 19\, 1775; three Black men who witnessed the battle as Lexington residents and later enlisted in the Continental Army; and two Black women and one Black man who witnessed the first day of war. Of the 8 soldiers\, 3 were born into land-owning\, tax-paying families and 5 were born into enslavement.
