DESCRIPTION:On the evening of April 18\, 1775\, Paul Revere was summoned and given the task of riding on horseback from Charlestown to Lexington\, approx. 12.5 miles\, to inform two leaders of the Sons of Liberty\, John Hancock and Samuel Adams who were staying in Lexington\, with the news that British soldiers stationed in Boston were about to march into the countryside northwest of the town. During his famous Midnight Ride\, Revere alerted the countryside of the British military movements with shouts of “the Redcoats are coming!” In the early morning on April 19\, 1775\, Capt. John Parker led 77 local militiamen and faced arriving British troops. Someone — still unknown to this day — fired a shot\, that provoked the start of the American Revolution. \nTo honor the 250th anniversary of this historic ride\, guests enjoy a special four-course Colonial-themed feast created by Executive Chef Alissa Tsukakoshi paired with local area brews and spirits from 8 pm-11 pm in a communal dining setting in Town Meeting Bistro. As a nod to Paul Revere\, a portrait of him on horseback is featured over the fireplace. DESCRIPTION:Couriers delivered the news of the conflict at Lexington soon after the event. One of the letters that helped spread the news will be displayed at the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in April. Joseph Palmer\, a member of the Massachusetts Committee of Safety\, sent the first urgent missive by messenger Israel or Isaac Bissell in the late morning of April 19\, 1775. Bissell rode to Connecticut and perhaps further. Recipients duplicated Palmer’s letter several times to carry the news far and wide. DESCRIPTION:Learn from world-renown storytellers Rochel Coleman and Valerie Tutson how to mine the archives and weave primary sources into an engaging story that brings history to life. \nLearn how to bring the stories of the Black men and women who played important roles in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19\, 1775. Also\, help to build their 18th century community by learning to tell the stories of the men and women\, Black\, White\, and Indigenous Caribbean who were their family members\, friends\, patrons\, and enslavers. \nLearn storytelling techniques and frameworks to identify\, craft\, and share stories to inspire audiences. \nAnd learn the business of storytelling and reenacting from professionals with decades of experience. \nABCL’s Black Patriots of Lexington is a multi-pronged project that includes a nine-part series that explores the lives of 5 soldiers who fought in Lexington on April 19\, 1775; three Black men who witnessed the battle as Lexington residents and later enlisted in the Continental Army; and two Black women and one Black man who witnessed the first day of war. Of the 8 soldiers\, 3 were born into land-owning\, tax-paying families and 5 were born into enslavement. DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, three days before the Boston Tea Party\, the Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. \nEach year\, we reenact this occasion with a day of tea history! Join us for fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773 to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea! \n12:00 – 3:00 PM: Drop-in activities upstairs at Buckman Tavern\n12:30 PM: The Lexington Minute Men practice military drill to ready themselves for the coming conflict\n1:00 PM: The 18th century townspeople of Lexington (led by local Boy Scouts) begin to build a fire to destroy the detested tea\n1:30 PM: William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps rallies the crowd with patriotic music\n1:45 PM: THE BURNING OF THE TEA\n2:00 PM: Program conclusion with music from William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps and a musket salute from the Lexington Minute Men \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Lexington Minute Men\, the Chinese-American Association of Lexington\, Boy Scout Troop 160\, and Mark T. SUMMARY:Reconstruction and the “Moral Sense of the Nation” with Dr. Robert Bellinger
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bellinger is a public historian with a background in Black Studies and almost half a century of experience as an educator\, and a Professor Emeritus in History Suffolk University. He has served as a consultant and historian for documentary films\, most notably the well-received documentary Birth of a Movement (2017). \nDr. Bellinger has been engaged in public history projects at historic sites\, monuments\, and installations. Recently Dr. Bellinger completed a research project with the Lexington Historical Society on the history of Black people in Lexington 1690-1800\, to expand the understanding and interpretation of the history of this Massachusetts community. A recent inductee into the Old Middlesex Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, Dr. Bellinger also serves on several boards\, including for the Robbins House in Concord\, the Shirley-Eustis House in Roxbury\, and Middleton Place in Charleston\, South Carolina. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. SUMMARY:Declaring Independence Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!

The Lexington Minute Men will be Presenting Colors. \nThe corps will march from Depot Square in Lexington to the Battle Green. Once the corps arrive to the Green a military song performance\, called a tattoo\, will be held consisting of Revolution-era music by lantern light. \nOn Saturday\, a total of 28 fife and drum corps from six states will march from Militia Drive along Worthen Road to Hastings Park. This will commence a free afternoon of fife and drum music from the 18th century and beyond.
