SUMMARY:The Will To Live Concert by Lexington Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Ives | Three Places in New England 1st Movement\n(The ‘St. Gaudens’ in Boston Common\, Col. Shaw\n& his Colored Regiment)\nNielsen | Symphony No. 4\nHolst | The Planets \nAll ages. \nWritten in 1916\, Nielsen said the word Inextinguishable sums up his Fourth Symphony – “the elemental will to live …. Music is Life. As soon as even a single note sounds in the air or through space\, it is the result of life and movement.” These three works exemplify the human spirit that was America in the Revolutionary War. The Ives is a very local Massachusetts story. The Nielsen and the Holst were written in the same year and were influenced by what was in the air in WWI – again\, humanity’s desire to live in Freedom from oppression and the forces of evil.

SUMMARY:Voices on the Green: "Better Together"
DESCRIPTION:Voices on the Green\, First Parish in Lexington’s live storytelling and music series now in its seventh season\, is partnering with the Lexington 250 Celebrations Committee to present the first of four shows that celebrate the 250th anniversary of the conflict on Lexington’s green that is often considered the beginning of the war for independence. But prior to the flashpoint of April 19\, 1775\, the colonists in this town had realized that they were “better together.” \nIn today’s Lexington\, and throughout its history\, friendships\, marriages\, protest groups\, sports teams\, choruses\, fraternal organizations\, houses of worship\, twelve-step programs\, cultural affinity groups\, advocacy groups\, and governments all share the same commonality —they bring people together with the hope that more can be achieved together than alone. In the first of four shows celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Town of Lexington\, our production will focus on how we are “Better Together” as shown in both historic and contemporary Lexington. \nThe show\, featuring six storytellers and four musical performances\, is hosted by award-winning spoken word artist Regie O’Hare Gibson. And for each show\, Voices on the Green partners with a community organization carrying forward work that aligns with the performance theme. The community partner for this show is Lexington Lyceum Advocates\, who are focused on re-energizing the spirit and synergies that come from people gathering in common space to promote dialogue and advance justice in our town. Join us to enjoy an evening when we are all “Better Together.” Doors open at 6:30 pm. All are welcome. \nLearn more: www.voicesonthegreen.org

SUMMARY:A New Revolution in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, 16.82% of Lexington’s population was Chinese\, which is proportionally the second-highest Chinese population of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Yet just 40 years ago\, Lexington had only 392 Chinese residents – and in 1890\, two. This presentation\, featuring research by Lexington High School student Sophia Zhang and live Q&A with local Chinese American panelists\, aims to discuss and explain the multi-phase evolution of the Lexington Chinese American community\, within broader historical contexts. This presentation will also highlight the civic contributions Chinese Americans have made to Lexington and the community’s place in the town’s ongoing demographic transformation. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-new-revolution-in-lexington-tickets-940429077687?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Ben Rudnick - Chamber of Commerce Summer Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:With countless kudos to their credit\, including SEVEN Parents’ Choice Awards\, the band considers its main focus to be providing a common ground where all family members can enjoy a shared musical experience. \nDrawing on original songs and traditional material\, the band seamlessly integrates classic Americana with their own unique sound. It’s kids\, it’s families\, it’s music… live music. \nThe band is in their 23nd year of making music for families. That includes twelve recordings\, tours up and down the east coast\, a week of shows in Colorado and a play about a certain frog\, named Sam\, and his alien buddy\, Trip. The band is an institution in the Boston area and are happiest when playing outside on a perfect New England summer evening. \nThe tightly-honed quartet ties its identity to their New England homeland. Their sound is pure Americana. There’s a summer feel with a strong sense of celebration and happiness. \nThe Summer Concert Series has been providing free music for over three decades now and attracts families from Lexington and many of the surrounding communities. With a variety of musical styles\, and a relaxed “picnic in the park” atmosphere\, the concerts promote the old-time neighborliness of Lexington. Remember to bring your own lawn chairs\, blankets\, and refreshments. \nConcerts will be canceled due to inclement weather\, and there are no rain dates scheduled. SUMMARY:Declaring Independence Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!
