DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, three days before the Boston Tea Party\, the Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. \nEach year\, we reenact this occasion with a day of tea history! Join us for fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773 to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea! \n12:00 – 3:00 PM: Drop-in activities upstairs at Buckman Tavern\n12:30 PM: The Lexington Minute Men practice military drill to ready themselves for the coming conflict\n1:00 PM: The 18th century townspeople of Lexington (led by local Boy Scouts) begin to build a fire to destroy the detested tea\n1:30 PM: William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps rallies the crowd with patriotic music\n1:45 PM: THE BURNING OF THE TEA\n2:00 PM: Program conclusion with music from William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps and a musket salute from the Lexington Minute Men \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Lexington Minute Men\, the Chinese-American Association of Lexington\, Boy Scout Troop 160\, and Mark T. Shaw\n& his Colored Regiment)\nNielsen | Symphony No. 4\nHolst | The Planets \nAll ages. \nWritten in 1916\, Nielsen said the word Inextinguishable sums up his Fourth Symphony – “the elemental will to live …. Music is Life. As soon as even a single note sounds in the air or through space\, it is the result of life and movement.” These three works exemplify the human spirit that was America in the Revolutionary War. The Ives is a very local Massachusetts story. The Nielsen and the Holst were written in the same year and were influenced by what was in the air in WWI – again\, humanity’s desire to live in Freedom from oppression and the forces of evil.

DESCRIPTION:Voices on the Green\, First Parish in Lexington’s live storytelling and music series now in its seventh season\, is partnering with the Lexington 250 Celebrations Committee to present the first of four shows that celebrate the 250th anniversary of the conflict on Lexington’s green that is often considered the beginning of the war for independence. But prior to the flashpoint of April 19\, 1775\, the colonists in this town had realized that they were “better together.” \nIn today’s Lexington\, and throughout its history\, friendships\, marriages\, protest groups\, sports teams\, choruses\, fraternal organizations\, houses of worship\, twelve-step programs\, cultural affinity groups\, advocacy groups\, and governments all share the same commonality —they bring people together with the hope that more can be achieved together than alone. In the first of four shows celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Town of Lexington\, our production will focus on how we are “Better Together” as shown in both historic and contemporary Lexington. \nThe show\, featuring six storytellers and four musical performances\, is hosted by award-winning spoken word artist Regie O’Hare Gibson. And for each show\, Voices on the Green partners with a community organization carrying forward work that aligns with the performance theme. Diwali is a time for Indians of all backgrounds to celebrate and commit ourselves to making choices that move us toward enlightenment and away from ignorance and vice. SUMMARY:Reconstruction and the “Moral Sense of the Nation” with Dr. Robert Bellinger
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bellinger is a public historian with a background in Black Studies and almost half a century of experience as an educator\, and a Professor Emeritus in History Suffolk University. He has served as a consultant and historian for documentary films\, most notably the well-received documentary Birth of a Movement (2017). \nDr. Bellinger has been engaged in public history projects at historic sites\, monuments\, and installations. Recently Dr. Bellinger completed a research project with the Lexington Historical Society on the history of Black people in Lexington 1690-1800\, to expand the understanding and interpretation of the history of this Massachusetts community. A recent inductee into the Old Middlesex Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution\, Dr. Bellinger also serves on several boards\, including for the Robbins House in Concord\, the Shirley-Eustis House in Roxbury\, and Middleton Place in Charleston\, South Carolina. DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Minuteman National Historical Park and Walden Pond were named as among the top 11 endangered historic sites in America\, in part due to climate change. The alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of historic structures like those we steward in Lexington and Concord\, as well as the natural historical landscape. \nMore than 40 years ago\, park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent years of his life exploring Arctic North America on extended sea kayaking\, packrafting\, skiing\, dogsledding\, and backpacking journeys—often alone for weeks at a time. After three decades away from the Noatak\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes. The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press)—the subject of his October 17 image-intensive presentation. \nA frequent National Geographic grantee and NEA Literary Fellow\, Waterman (Lexington High class of 1974) is the author of 17 books. \n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:Making Meaning and Memories: The Creation of the Lexington Women’s Monument with Meredith Bergmann\, Celeste Freeman and Jessie Steigerwald
DESCRIPTION:This special panel event features sculptor Meredith Bergmann\, designer of the newly unveiled Lexington Women’s Monument. The work is called “Something Is Being Done” and this panel will include both descendants of women commemorated in the monument\, as well as members of the LexSeeHer Research Team. The monument recognizes more than twenty women and girls. Learn more about both the creation of the monument\, and the way community members have engaged with the work since the unveiling. \nFor over 40 years\, Meredith Bergmann has been making sculpture that deals with complex themes in an accessible\, beautiful\, and provocative way. Working within the tradition of narrative sculpture\, she draws on her love of history of art\, literature\, and mythology to make the past speak to the present. Blending the sensuality and power of representational sculpture with her own subtle sense of mischief\, her work evokes multilayered responses. She works on both public and private monuments\, exploring issues of history\, social justice\, race\, human rights\, different abilities\, and the power of music and poetry. Her work has been shown in more than two dozen exhibitions and appears in over a dozen institutional collections.
