SUMMARY:Untold Stories of Women's Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:“250” celebrates the attaining of the vote for the men of our new country. This evening finishes the story by detailing the long history of enfranchisement for women!! The evening opens with “How Long Must We Wait\,” a 60-minute documentary film by Jaclyn O’Laughlin detailing the 72-year battle that women fought to achieve the right to vote in the United States. The film focuses on the events in 1917 that led to the imprisonment and harsh treatment of suffragists in a prison in Lorton\, Virginia\, which helped turn the tide of public opinion\, ultimately leading to the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. The film also focuses on the reality that there is still much work left to be done in the fight for women’s equal rights and for democracy. In the second half of the evening\, the voices of our suffragists come to life in the production of “Lifting as We Climb\,” a choral and spoken word piece composed by Joan Szymko to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Eight guest readers narrate the little known history of the fight for equality\, voicing the words and ideas of many of the activists of the movement\, while also revealing the hidden struggles and contributions made by African American women. Interspersed with and beautifully underscoring the narration is a moving choral accompaniment provided by Cantilena Women’s Voices and members of Voices Rising\, reminding us that we are yet again today experiencing an assault on voting rights\, equality and universal suffrage which will require our continued activism. The evening will be capped off by an informal talk back and reception. Reserve your ticket after June 4 at: afdtheater.org/special-events.

SUMMARY:Gallery Tour of "Protest & Promise: The American Revolution in Lexington"
DESCRIPTION:After years of tension between Great Britain and its North American colonies\, a skirmish on the town green in Lexington\, Massachusetts broke long-held bonds and ignited the American Revolutionary War. In an unprecedented moment in 1775\, ordinary people in Lexington made extraordinary choices. An entire community—women\, men\, black\, white\, young\, old\, enslaved\, and free—helped spark a revolution. \n\n\n\nToday\, 250 years later\, Americans continue to remember April 19\, 1775 as a moment when everyday people shaped history. To mark this important anniversary\, the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library presents “Protest & Promise: The American Revolution in Lexington.” The exhibition explores the events of April 19\, 1775\, with images\, objects\, and an in-depth look at this watershed event and how it has been remembered. Join museum staff for a free guided tour of the exhibition on June 28 at 11 AM! \n\n\n\nLearn more: https://www.srmml.org/exhibitions/protest-promise-the-american-revolution-in-lexington/
