SUMMARY:Annual Reenactment of the Lexington Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, 1773\, three days before the Boston Tea Party\, the Lexington Town Meeting concluded a multi-day debate with a resolution to stop purchasing or drinking imported British tea. The crowd spilled out onto the common behind the meeting house and made a bonfire\, throwing the entire town’s supply of tea into it. \nEach year\, we reenact this occasion with a day of tea history! Join us for fun\, interactive activities to learn more about why tea was so important to the Revolution. Meet with the Lexington residents of 1773 to hear their side of the story\, find out where tea comes from\, and end the day by gathering around the fire and burning the tea! \n12:00 – 3:00 PM: Drop-in activities upstairs at Buckman Tavern\n12:30 PM: The Lexington Minute Men practice military drill to ready themselves for the coming conflict\n1:00 PM: The 18th century townspeople of Lexington (led by local Boy Scouts) begin to build a fire to destroy the detested tea\n1:30 PM: William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps rallies the crowd with patriotic music\n1:45 PM: THE BURNING OF THE TEA\n2:00 PM: Program conclusion with music from William Diamond Jr. Fife and Drum Corps and a musket salute from the Lexington Minute Men \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Lexington Minute Men\, the Chinese-American Association of Lexington\, Boy Scout Troop 160\, and Mark T. DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Minuteman National Historical Park and Walden Pond were named as among the top 11 endangered historic sites in America\, in part due to climate change. The alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of historic structures like those we steward in Lexington and Concord\, as well as the natural historical landscape. \nMore than 40 years ago\, park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent years of his life exploring Arctic North America on extended sea kayaking\, packrafting\, skiing\, dogsledding\, and backpacking journeys—often alone for weeks at a time. After three decades away from the Noatak\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes. The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press)—the subject of his October 17 image-intensive presentation. \nA frequent National Geographic grantee and NEA Literary Fellow\, Waterman (Lexington High class of 1974) is the author of 17 books. \n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers

Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nStarting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, this tour explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. SUMMARY:A New Revolution in Lexington
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, 16.82% of Lexington’s population was Chinese\, which is proportionally the second-highest Chinese population of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. Yet just 40 years ago\, Lexington had only 392 Chinese residents – and in 1890\, two. This presentation\, featuring research by Lexington High School student Sophia Zhang and live Q&A with local Chinese American panelists\, aims to discuss and explain the multi-phase evolution of the Lexington Chinese American community\, within broader historical contexts. SUMMARY:Declaring Independence Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:This dramatic presentation\, created by Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area\, aims to find out how our local towns read and reacted to the Declaration of Independence. Across the colonies\, and particularly in Massachusetts\, towns debated what freedom meant to them\, and grappled with the grievances aired in the official Declaration. What did the words in the final document mean to them? Costumed reenactors will bring life to the words of the past\, with narration by former State Representative Jay Kaufman. Rounding out our evening will be a performance by the Lexington Historical Society Colonial Singers. Some of our favorite tunes from the 18th century were highly political\, and many of them were also taken from popular English military music!

DESCRIPTION:Nearly 20 years ago\, while living in Lexington\, author and filmmaker Rick Beyer learned the incredible story of the WWII deception units known as The Ghost Army. He soon launched a quest to tell the world about their exploits\, and to make sure what they did would never be forgotten. That led to the Ghost Army documentary (2013)\, the book (2015)\, and finally the Congressional Gold Medal (2024)\, the highest honor Congress can bestow. \nNow Rick returns to Lexington to recount his epic Ghost Army journey. It began on a winter’s day in a Lexington coffee shop\, and after innumerable twists and turns\, culminated in a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol presided over by the Speaker of the House. Rick will share insights\, anecdotes\, and behind-the-scenes adventures from this wild 20-year ride that so many people in Lexington took part in. All illustrated with rarely seen photos and footage.
