SUMMARY:Untold Stories of Women's Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:“250” celebrates the attaining of the vote for the men of our new country. This evening finishes the story by detailing the long history of enfranchisement for women!! The evening opens with “How Long Must We Wait\,” a 60-minute documentary film by Jaclyn O’Laughlin detailing the 72-year battle that women fought to achieve the right to vote in the United States. The film focuses on the events in 1917 that led to the imprisonment and harsh treatment of suffragists in a prison in Lorton\, Virginia\, which helped turn the tide of public opinion\, ultimately leading to the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920. The film also focuses on the reality that there is still much work left to be done in the fight for women’s equal rights and for democracy. In the second half of the evening\, the voices of our suffragists come to life in the production of “Lifting as We Climb\,” a choral and spoken word piece composed by Joan Szymko to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Eight guest readers narrate the little known history of the fight for equality\, voicing the words and ideas of many of the activists of the movement\, while also revealing the hidden struggles and contributions made by African American women. Interspersed with and beautifully underscoring the narration is a moving choral accompaniment provided by Cantilena Women’s Voices and members of Voices Rising\, reminding us that we are yet again today experiencing an assault on voting rights\, equality and universal suffrage which will require our continued activism. The evening will be capped off by an informal talk back and reception. Reserve your ticket after June 4 at: afdtheater.org/special-events.
