SUMMARY:Coming to America: A Musical Journey
DESCRIPTION:Cary Lecture\nJonathan McPhee\, director of the Lexington Symphony\, will give a talk entitled “Coming to America: A Musical Journey”. It will include musical examples and interludes with the help of members of the orchestra. As he says in the introduction on our flyer\, he plans to introduce “great music during this period of reflection on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution [that] illustrates the cultural richness immigrants have infused into our communities and society”. \nThe people of Lexington have always been the intended audience for our four free annual lectures\, and we’ve found that the Internet has brought us many visitors from neighboring towns. This is the second of two Cary Lectures in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Lexington. The first was Professor Philip Deloria on October 5\, 2024 (“The Five Things Indians Say”)\, and the third will be the Honorable Stephen Breyer\, retired Justice of the Supreme Court\, on May 3\, 2025\, for which there will be a separate entry on this site.

SUMMARY:The Cost Of Freedom Concert by Lexington Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Still | In Memorium\nLidström | World Premiere\nMats Lidström\, cello\nBeethoven | Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” \nAll ages. \nComposed in 1930\, the Still work memorializes the forgotten black soldiers who died for our country during the Civil War. W.G. Still considered this piece an ode to the unfulfilled promise of true freedom for black Americans. We know that there were black patriots who fought in the Revolutionary War\, seeking freedom for all Americans. In the Battle of Lexington\, one of the most famous black patriots who died in the Battle of Lexington was Prince Estabrook. Cary Hall has the Estabrook Room\, named in his memory. Mats Lidstrom’s composition focuses on a famous speech given by Robert F. Kennedy before he was assassinated during his bid for the American Presidency. The cost he paid for his beliefs is obvious. It is also a World Premiere. Beethoven’s Third Symphony was inspired by what began as the war to free the French from oppression\, only to then go very wrong as its Hero\, turned out to be completely self-interested. In the end\, Beethoven’s belief in Mankind was his final focus in what became the “heroic” symphony.

SUMMARY:The Fight For Freedom Concert by Lexington Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Hindemith | Mathis der Maler\nVaughan Williams | Sea Symphony\nAaron Engebreth\, baritone\nMichelle Trainor\, soprano\nNew World Chorale \nAll ages \nThis program focuses on the fight. The Hindemith piece is built around Mathis the Painter’s Fight for Freedom in the 16th Century. One could say it was Hindemith’s thinly veiled protest against what the Nazis were doing in WW2. Hindemith based this work on the triptych painted by Mathias Grunewald in his struggle for artistic freedom in the 16th Century during the repressive policies of the Protestant Reformation. The parallel was all too easily recognized by the Nazis\, and Hindemith escaped to the USA with his life. Ralph Vaughan Williams selected verses from American poet\, Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” for the first three movements and from his “Passage to India” for the last movement of his Sea Symphony. Whitman uses images of brave sailors exploring the vast oceans as a colorful metaphor for the voyage through life of the human soul.

SUMMARY:The Will To Live Concert by Lexington Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Ives | Three Places in New England 1st Movement\n(The ‘St. Gaudens’ in Boston Common\, Col. Shaw\n& his Colored Regiment)\nNielsen | Symphony No. 4\nHolst | The Planets \nAll ages. \nWritten in 1916\, Nielsen said the word Inextinguishable sums up his Fourth Symphony – “the elemental will to live …. Music is Life. As soon as even a single note sounds in the air or through space\, it is the result of life and movement.” These three works exemplify the human spirit that was America in the Revolutionary War. The Ives is a very local Massachusetts story. The Nielsen and the Holst were written in the same year and were influenced by what was in the air in WWI – again\, humanity’s desire to live in Freedom from oppression and the forces of evil.

SUMMARY:Diwali Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Indian Americans of Lexington (IAL) puts on a Diwali event full of food\, mehndi\, multi-cultural performances\, and of course a dance party for the audience to join in on the artistic expression. \nThis year with the 250 celebration approaching\, Diwali feels even more important. SUMMARY:Into the Thaw
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Minuteman National Historical Park and Walden Pond were named as among the top 11 endangered historic sites in America\, in part due to climate change. The alterations to our natural environment during the climate crisis have far-reaching consequences to the preservation of historic structures like those we steward in Lexington and Concord\, as well as the natural historical landscape. \nMore than 40 years ago\, park ranger Jon Waterman took his first journey to Alaska’s Noatak River. Astonished by the abundant wildlife\, the strange landscape\, and its otherworldly light\, he spent years of his life exploring Arctic North America on extended sea kayaking\, packrafting\, skiing\, dogsledding\, and backpacking journeys—often alone for weeks at a time. After three decades away from the Noatak\, he returned with his son\, and amid a now-flooded river bereft of the once-plentiful caribou\, he was shocked by the changes. The following year\, 2022\, he took one final journey to film and document the climate crisis across the North in his new book\, Into the Thaw (Patagonia Press)—the subject of his October 17 image-intensive presentation. \nA frequent National Geographic grantee and NEA Literary Fellow\, Waterman (Lexington High class of 1974) is the author of 17 books. \n$10 Lexington Historical Society members\, $15 nonmembers
