Lex250 Commission Highlight: Doug Lucente

In the final days leading up to April 19, the Lex250 Commission would like to highlight our members who have dedicated an incredible amount of time to making our 250th anniversary commemoration a success.

Today, we’re highlighting Doug Lucente!

What specific areas of the Commission’s work are you most passionate about?

I’m especially passionate about finding creative ways to bring Lexington’s unique story to life and making our history feel exciting and approachable for everyone. This celebration truly has something for everyone. Whether it’s through innovative events, educational programs, or community involvement like the countdown calendar, I love seeing people of all ages and backgrounds connect with the 250th in a way that feels personal and meaningful. My hope is that years from now, people will remember the little moments and feel proud that they were part of it, and that they were genuinely welcome to be involved.

What do you think is the most important aspect of commemorating this milestone?

Growing up here and being involved in town events for years, it’s easy to forget just how special Lexington’s history is. This 250th is our opportunity to showcase it proudly to the world and, just as importantly, to inspire younger generations to feel that same sense of pride and connection. Since I was only nine months old during the Bicentennial, this feels like my chance to truly experience a big Lexington celebration firsthand. For me, the most important part is bringing our community together and strengthening our connections with each other. We are not only honoring our shared heritage, we are also creating new traditions that link our past and our future.

What event or moment are you most looking forward to as part of the 250th anniversary commemoration?

It is hard to pick just one. I am especially excited for the Patriots’ Day Awards Ceremony and VO250 Initiative at Cary Hall on April 17. With Lexington’s own Rachel Dratch hosting, it is sure to be a night to remember. I am also really looking forward to the 111th Patriots’ Day 5-Mile Road Race on April 19. This is a tradition that has been close to my heart for over 40 years through the Lions Club. This year is especially meaningful because it is the first one without my dad, who was such a big part of it. We are aiming for 1,000 runners, which would be a record for us, and all proceeds will benefit Journey for Sight, which supports research into eye disease. I truly believe this will be our best race yet. Other major highlights for me include the Battle Green Rededication at 11:00 a.m. on April 19 and the Patriotic Picnic at Hastings Park on Monday April 21. Both events are one of a kind and celebrate Patriots’ Day weekend in fun, heartfelt ways. How often do you see Army parachutists landing on the Battle Green? Or get to hear Keith Lockhart and members of the Boston Pops perform right here in town? Each of these events is extraordinary in its own way and offers something special for everyone.
