Today’s #CalendarKeeper: The Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL)
As we kick off Black History Month, today’s #CalendarKeepers are folks from the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington (ABCL)—an organization dedicated to fostering civic engagement, advocating for equity, and ensuring that Black history is an integral part of our shared community story.
As part of the #CountdownTo250, ABCL is leading an important initiative: Black Patriots of Lexington—a multi-pronged project that sheds light on the contributions of Black men and women in the events of April 19, 1775. This project includes:
📽️ A docuseries exploring the lives of eight Black soldiers and witnesses—five who fought in Lexington, three who later enlisted in the Continental Army, and three who witnessed the first day of war.
🏡 A historical narrative revealing that while three of these men were born into land-owning, tax-paying families, five were born into enslavement—yet all died free men after serving their country.
⚔️ Reenactor workshops, bringing these stories to life for future generations.
Supported by a grant from the Community Endowment of Lexington, this initiative ensures that the contributions of Black Patriots are honored as we commemorate Lexington’s 250th anniversary.
