38 Days to Go – Celebrating the LHS Turing Alliance!

As we continue the #CountdownTo250, we recognize the Lexington High School (LHS) Turing Alliance, a student-led club dedicated to fostering a supportive community for neurodivergent students and promoting awareness and advocacy within the school and broader Lexington community.

About the Turing Alliance:

Named after the pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing, who is believed to have been neurodivergent, the Turing Alliance provides a space for students with diverse neurological profiles to connect, share experiences, and address unique challenges they face. The club’s mission encompasses both peer support and proactive initiatives to educate others about neurodiversity.

See the Turing Alliance present live at Parent Academy on Saturday, March 22nd, at the Community Center! Turing Alliance students will present about understanding neurodiversity, navigating neurodivergence, and the supports they find helpful both in and out of school. There will also be time for Q&A with the students.

Initiatives and Impact:

The Turing Alliance has been instrumental in increasing neurodiversity awareness at LHS through various initiatives:

• Neurodiversity Celebration Week: The club organized activities and displayed posters around the school to encourage a positive view of neurodiversity, highlighting that different neurological conditions can be strengths rather than hindrances.

• Educational Outreach: Members of the Turing Alliance have conducted presentations on neurodiversity to LHS health classes and taught parents about neurodiversity at the Parent Academy, an annual event where LHS parents can take classes taught by various instructors.

• Community Engagement: The club has participated in community events, such as the “Celebration on Neurodiversity in Our Community,” held at the Lexington Community Center, to showcase the talents and achievements of neurodivergent individuals.

Collaborations:

The Turing Alliance collaborated with the Lexington Police Department to implement the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative aimed at fostering a safer and more understanding environment for neurodivergent drivers during traffic stops. This program provides officers with immediate, accessible information about autism and other neurodiversities, promoting empathy and effective communication.

Looking Ahead:

The LHS Turing Alliance continues to be a beacon of inclusivity and education, working tirelessly to create an environment where all students are understood, supported, and celebrated for their unique perspectives and abilities.
