62 Days to Go – The Old North Bridge Society and Lexington’s Legacy of Patriotism

As we continue our #CountdownTo250, we honor the Old North Bridge Society, the very first chapter of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.), founded on May 11, 1895, in Concord. This society reflects the same dedication to history and civic responsibility that we celebrate in Lexington’s 250th anniversary.

The society was established by Harriett Lothrop, better known as Margaret Sidney, the beloved author of The Five Little Peppers series. A passionate advocate for instilling patriotism in young people, Lothrop’s vision for C.A.R. took root when she addressed the 1895 NSDAR Continental Congress. Her daughter, Margaret Lothrop, became C.A.R. Member #1 and was a member of the Old North Bridge Society.

Much like Lexington’s role in the fight for independence, C.A.R. preserves Revolutionary ideals by training young leaders, engaging them in historical learning, and instilling civic values. With Lexington at the heart of our nation’s founding, the work of C.A.R. ensures that future generations remain connected to the ideals of April 19, 1775.

As we prepare to commemorate Lexington’s 250th, we celebrate organizations like C.A.R. that uphold the same values of citizenship, leadership, and historical stewardship that have defined Lexington for centuries.
